If you are not yet familiar with the basic structure of a quiz, it is highly recommended that you review the Quizzes - Structure and Overview topic to gain an understanding of the various components that make up a quiz.

Question Types

There are a number of different types of questions that you can include in your quizzes:
  • Multiple-Choice: Allow the student to choose from several possible answers to the question.
  • True-False: Answer to the question is either true or false.
  • Short Answer: The answer to the question consists of a word or short phrase.
  • Fill-in-the-Blank: Student completes a statement or phrase by filling in the missing information.
  • Essay: Question involves a much more detailed response that will not be exact, word for word, between different students.
  • Arbitrarily Complex Math Equations: This is not a specific type of question, but rather, can be included in any type of question. See "General Question Properties" below for more details.
  • Math - General: Stores a mathematic expression such as 5 + 6, 10 * 5, 8 - 5 - 7 + 2, etc. and automatically calculates the correct answer for you.
  • Math - Vertical: Stores a mathematic expression that will be shown in a vertical orientation and automatically calculates the correct answer for you. For example:
    100
    + 12
    -------
    112

General Question Properties

In addition to different types of questions, you can also specify a number of different properties about each question. These properties are located on the General panel in the Question Editor:
  • Point Value: Each question can have a different point value that will be used when computing a score for a quiz. When a quiz is run as Category Challenge (similar to the popular Jeopardy game show), the point values can be used as the point values in the grid.
  • Difficulty Level: You can specify a difficulty level for each question. This is purely informational for the quiz author and won't effect scoring.
  • Randomize Answers: If selected, the quiz will randomize the order of the answer choices if the question in multiple choice, each time the quiz is run or printed.
  • Category: This is a purely informational setting for the quiz author, to make it possible to search for questions that fall into a particular category.
  • Question Text: The text for the question. This is usually specified, but is optional (i.e. you may want to simply show a video, image, or audio clip.
  • Equation: An optional arbitrarily complex mathematical equation. The equations are stored as MathML 2.0 content and allows you to include fractions (including equations over other equations), algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, numerous mathematical symbols, Greek letters, etc. See Editing Equations for complete details.
  • Recorded Audio: Use the "Record Audio" section in the question editor to record audio directly from your computer's microphone to create a spelling or foreign language quiz. Directions for recording your own audio clip are included in the "Record Audio" section of both the Quick Entry and normal question entry dialogs. See Audio Questions for complete details.

Multimedia Question Properties

Questions can also contain embedded audio and visual multimedia elements. These settings are located on the Multimedia panel in the Question Editor:
  • Audio Media: Use the button to select an audio clip to embed into the question. Any audio types supported by your Windows Media Player are supported. If you have a file that is not supported by your Windows Media Player, you can visit Microsoft to find more information about supported file types in Windows Media Player.
  • Visual Media: Use the button to select a video clip or an image to embed into the question. Any video types supported by your Windows Media Player and images of type PNG, JPG, GIF, and BMP are supported. If you have a file that is not supported by your Windows Media Player, you can visit Microsoft to find more information about supported file types in Windows Media Player.

Question Answers

Depending on the type of question, the question may contain one or more answers. The answer(s) are located on the Answers panel in the Question Editor. The following describes the answer possibilities for each type of question:
  • Multiple-Choice: Contain one or more answer choices with at least one of them marked as "correct". Use the answer panel on the Question Editor or the Quick Question Entry dialog to enter the answer possibilities. Each answer can contain text, an image that will be displayed on the question when a student takes the quiz, or a mathematical equation. For more information on editing mathematical equations see Editing Equations.
  • True-False: Answer possibilities are limited to true and false.
  • Short Answer: The answer to the question consists of a word or short phrase. When the quiz is administered via the computer, students must enter the answer exactly as you enter it when creating the quiz with the exception that it ignores upper and lower case letters an leading and trailing spaces.
  • Fill-in-the-Blank: No answers are specified on fill-in-the-blank questions. To enter this type of question you first type in the complete text. Then, mark off the words or phrases that you want to be shown blank during quiz taking or on the printout by putting ## at the beginning and end of the word or phrase. For example: We hold these ##truths## to be self ##evident## that all men are created ##equal##. This would leave a blank for truths, evident, and equal.
  • Essay: There is no way for the software to automatically grade this type of question, so typically the quiz author will simply put notes into the answer area about the things they will check manually later.
  • Math - General: No entry of answer is necessary. The mathematical expression will be automatically evaluated by the software.
  • Math - Vertical: No entry of answer is necessary. The problem will be automatically evaluated by the software.

Built-In Dictionary

Quiz Extreme has, built-in, the entire Webster's 1913 Unabridged Dictionary (public domain). To lookup definitions for a word, click the button at the bottom of the answers panel and select from the available definitions. There are over 100,000 words in the dictionary.
